Born Luana Margo Anderson on May 12, 1938, Luana Anders began hershow-business career as a bike messenger at MGM along with fellowthespians 'Jack Nicholson (I)' , 'Sandra Knight (I)' andfuture film producers 'George Edwards (I)' and 'Fred Roos' . She convinced Nicholson to join her in her improv acting class withlegendary teacher and veteran character actor 'Jeff Corey (I)' ;her other classmates included 'Sally Kellerman' ,'Richard Chamberlain (I)' , director/producer 'Roger Corman' and screenwriter 'Robert Towne (I)' . Luana began her acting careerin her teens in such 1950s "B" movies as Reform School Girl (1957) (alongside her lifelong friend SallyKellerman) and Life Begins at 17 (1958) , in which she co-starredwith actor (and future producer) 'Mark Damon (I)' . She also workedwith Damon in Roger Corman's The Young Racers (1963) .

The soundman on "The Young Racers" asked her if she wanted to star in his firstdirecting effort. The sound man was 'Francis Ford Coppola' andAnders played the conniving and duplicitous Louise Haloran in Coppola'sdebut feature, Dementia 13 (1963) . She played 'Vincent Price (I)' 's sister Catherine Medina inCorman's Pit and the Pendulum (1961) . Anders acted opposite'Charles Grodin' and 'John Gabriel (I)' in Sex and the College Girl (1964) . Luana was in three pictures fordirector 'Curtis Harrington' : ingénue Ellen Sands in Night Tide (1961) , a cameo as a party guest in Games (1967) and repressed librarian Louise in the perverse The Killing Kind (1973) .

Anders achieved cult status as groovyhippie commune dweller Lisa in Easy Rider (1969) . 'Robert Altman (I)' frequently credited Luana with getting hiscareer started; she has a small role as a streetwalker'Sandy Dennis (I)' picks up in Altman's That Cold Day in the Park (1969) . Friend Jack Nicholson made apoint of seeing and commenting on the movie during the Cannes filmfestival where "Easy Rider" won the Palme D'or; the subsequentpublicity gave Altman the notoriety to launch his career. She appeared in a number of movies withcollaborator 'Richard Martini (I)' , including You Can't Hurry Love (1988) , about which "Variety" declared,"It's about time we see the great Luana Anders back on the screen". Shewas a member of the improvisational comedy stage group The Committee. Alifelong Buddhist and supporter of the American chapter of Soka GakkaiInternational, Luana Anders died on July 21, 1996. .
