French actress Flo Ankah appears opposite Jonathan Pryce and JasonSchwartzman in Listen Up Philip (Sundance premiere). Her solo play withmusic-Edith Piaf Alive-is produced regularly at Joe's Pub at the PublicTheater. She starred in Loving the Silent Tears, before a sold-outaudience of 6400 at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium, directed by VincentPaterson and opposite Liz Callaway, Debbie Gravitte, Jody Watley andJon Secada. Born and raised on a French farm, Flo started out as a dancer and fellinto acting by happenstance.
She is a graduate of the Merce CunninghamStudio and Upright Citizens' Brigade, and is schooled in drama andopera. Determined, genuine and charismatic, she has been defined as"elegant and edgy in her personality" with "regal, glamorous looks likesome old Hollywood beauty. "As a theatrical artist, Flo played at the Inwood Shakespeare Festival,appeared in experimental works for Meredith Monk, Young Jean Lee, MinaNishimura, and went on to perform solo at Symphony Space and Sleep NoMore. She was Timmy in Timmy's Idea-"bewitching and irritating"according to The New York Times-and played the execrable Frenchgirlfriend in Telly Savalas Live, because somebody had to do it. Flo is versatile with accents.
She is the voice of luxury brands inFrench and American commercials. Passionate about working withplaywrights and directors with a singular vision, she strives to makediscoveries in performance. Flo loves to play with voice, rhythm andmovement as the instrument of someone else's vision. And she can shutup on cue. She is also a songstress, performing vintage tunes with a modern twistunder the name Floanne, backed by her band of jazz musicians.
She hasbeen featured on NPR and French national television. Solo appearancesinclude Bryant Park, the New York Botanical Garden, the Standard Hotel,and the Metropolitan Room. Flo Ankah has received awards as a director for her experimental movies,and directs voice-over commercials. Her company Simple Production,produces collaborative film and stage works (presented at BAM, DGA,HERE Arts Center and Movement Research). She owns a 3D camera, which ispretty cool.
