Character Ray is introduce along with his two brothers, Terry, who owns a gym that trains boxers and Bunchy, who is a recovering alcoholic. He also finds out that he has a half brother, Marvin, from his father's, Mickey, affair with a woman, Claudette, while he was married to their mother and prior to going to jail. The brothers reveal to Ray about the brother and introduce him to Ray. They were keeping the secret for 10 years. You learn that the boys along with a sister, Bridget, who committed suicide, were molested as kids by a Catholic priest, who is killed in the beginning, by their father, who was just released from jail. Ray is married to Abby and has two kids and they currently live in California. Ray has a team that he works with, Lee, Lena, Avi, and Ezra. He does have a rocky relationship with his wife, Abby, where there is some issues with trust and fidelity.
Ray has a myriad of problems: his father, a malignancy fresh out of prison, has inveigled his way into Ray's family, spending the day with Abby and the children. A client won't report to a move set because his house has been broken in to. Another client, a closed homosexual whose action blockbuster is about to open, is at risk of blackmail over a sex tape. Ray has to find out who staged the break in and who has the sex tape, then he has to administer justice. Abby remains angry with Ray, so he sleeps away from home.
Mickey heads for Palm Springs with Bunchy and Daryll in tow to get what's his. Ray puts a tail on him. Abby insists that Ray go with Bridget, Conor, and her to the open house of an upscale private school. At the open house, Ray's work distracts him, Stu Feldman's son teases Conor, Ray's not entirely welcome there, and father and son end up in altercations. Pie helps Terry prepare for a date. Meanwhile, in Boston, Ray's plan to send Mickey back to prison is close to completion. Agent Miller shows a bit more of his hand.
Sully prepares for his travels to LA. Bridget gets a belly button piercing without consent and further disobeys her parents when she runs off to Marvins. Abby attempts to locate her before Ray finds out. Ray and Avi harass the housing agent that exploited Bunchy and over-charged him for his house. Meanwhile Mickey meets a fellow writer at a Spa, and things get a little bit awkward. Bunchy, Terry and Ray get together to celebrate Bridgets birthday. Abby becomes more and more inquisitive about Rays mysterious life. Bunchy catches a glimpse of the priest from his childhood that abused him.
Bunchy has a violent encounter with someone from his past. Ray is called to the Donovan Fite Club to handle a situation that has escalated in to a crisis. Ray meets with Ezra who pressures him about Sully, Mickey and the FBI. The police question Mickey about a recent murder. Ray sends Avi to protect Abby and the kids from Sully. Episode "Ding" Ray is called to defend a quarterback from an angry United States Navy SEAL; Lena contemplates quitting; an imprisoned Terry joins a group of weak inmates; Mickey carries out a plan to take over Gary's business; Bridget talks with Ray.
Finney tasks Ray with securing information that could bring down the governor and sink the NFL deal, but the mission turns Ray into a wedge between Finney and Paige. Meanwhile, Conor is thrust into a life-changing experience, Mickey and Daryll sell a coke-and-hooker party to a Silicon Valley start-up and Bunchy and Teresa's relationship finds an unusual release. Plus, with Abby in Boston, it falls on Ray to help Bridget with her scholastic and emotional turmoil. Bunchy gets keys to his new home - which after brief inspection requires some DIY. Mickey, despite recent feelings with Ray, decides to call to Abby for help in organising Bunchys' new house. Meanwhile word has spread about a housewarming party for Bunchy - which gives Bridget, Conor and Marvin Gaye Washington something to get excited about. Trying to balance the freewill of his children as well as Abby's questioning regarding his 'work life' - Ray attempts to console Ezra in preparation for surgery, and whilst trying to remove Agent Millers interest in the Donovans, Ray stumbles upon valuable information regarding Mickey.
Ray tries to scare off Agent Miller with the help of LSD, Ezra has brain surgery, and Bunchy wants to host a housewarming. Because Mickey will be there, Ray tells the family the party is off limits. Mickey calls Abby and asks for her woman's touch: she goes to Bunchy's to get the place ready. Marvin, Bridget, and Conor show up, to Bunchy and Mickey's delight. Then Bunchy has a flashback and the housewarming heats up. Ray's been with Ezra; when he arrives at Bunchy's, will he straighten things out?
Ray gets compromising information on Cochran, who is interrogating Mickey. Meanwhile, Abby tries to have fun with her prospective Trousdale neighbors and gets closer to Jim, her cop friend; Marvin gives Bridget an earring and takes her to a party; and Ray brings Conor to apologize to Alex.
Ray heads for Boston to track down Sully with a very generous offer. Tracking Sully proves to be more difficult than expected. Rays past re-emerges as Agent Miller moves forward with his investigation into the murder for which Mickey was framed. For this Miller requests a witness testimony from Sean Walker - though Mickey has other things on his mind when he meets with Walker. As the investigation moves on, Frank receives some interesting videos that will cause problems for Agent Miller. Tension between Ray and his family builds as Marvin brings up Rays knowledge of his mothers murder. Bridget runs into the arms of Marvin, and in attempting to bring their relationship to the next level Marvin crosses a boundary which Ray will not tolerate.
Telling his wife little, Ray goes to Boston to talk to Patrick Sullivan, a Mob boss on the lam for ten years. Before Ray leaves, Marvin confronts him over his mother's death. While Ray's in Boston, Mickey tries working his own scam on Sean Walker, a movie star who may have committed the crime that sent Mickey to prison for 20 years. Walker seems to be panicking, Ray warns him to do nothing, and Agent Miller puts new pressure on Mickey. Ray returns from Boston, a trip with an equal mix of visiting ghosts and making Sullivan an offer: he find Abby in trouble with the law and Bridget miserable after a visit to Marvin. How will Ray react?
Avi brings Sully back from LA. However Sully is not traveling alone, he brings his better half with him. Avi's journey becomes ever more troublesome, as the Sullivan's and their dog cause considerable delay. Avi decides to rest at a motel to alleviate some tension. Mrs Sullivan makes a very serious mistake, a mistake which Avi has to clean up. Conor asks Ray to go to an award ceremony with Tommy Wheeler, and arrangement that seems simple upon request. Things get complicated as more photos of Wheelers indiscretions are threatened to be exposed by Marty Grossman at the award ceremony. Before the ceremony takes place, the photos and the threat need to disappear, a job that Ray has to take on if he wants to win Conor back. Tommy considers the conservative approach, and Ray decides otherwise. Agent Miller puts more pressure on Mickey, and decides upon using a wire when Mickey next meets Walker. Ray contacts Frank again and questions him why the evidence against Miller hasn't been released. Frank gets an interesting dilemma from Ray, and decides that releasing the evidence is the best choice. A celebratory drink between Mickey and Agent Miller ends abruptly as Mickey makes a bold decision on how to deal with Millers "under the table" investigation into Ray, Ezra and Sean. Sully finally arrives in LA to discuss the terms of the deal he made with Ray.
Kate's investigation zeroes in on Mickey. Meanwhile, Tiny, a former member of Sully's gang, jeopardizes Cochran's career, and Ray tries to get Tiny safely out of the country. Mickey begins working at a Mexican restaurant; Abby meets a new friend at a gun range; and Bunchy encounters a potential new love interest.
Ray and Avi find Eddie on the run with Sully's money. Mickey gets kicked out of Bunchy's apartment. Later, Ray puts the word out that America's Most Wanted has been spotted in Santa Monica. Abby and the kids hide out at a swank Malibu resort. Ezra proposes to Deb.
Ray tells Bridget she needs to lie about where she was during the shooting for her own safety; Ray convinces Lee and Ezra to give Cookie the rights to Marvin and Rekon's music; Mickey makes plans to rob a pot store with Shorty; Kate visits a Walpole inmate to find out what went wrong with her article.
Ray Donovan is a Hollywood fixer, a transplant from Massachusetts with two psyche-scarred brothers who depend on him, a wife who wants to live in Beverly Hills, and opportunities to be unfaithful, particularly with a client's mistress with whom he has a history. Ray is also not above hitting ne'er-do-wells with a baseball bat. His equilibrium is upended when he learns that his father has been released early from prison and is headed to California to seek revenge.
Ray has his hands full: Ashley handcuffs herself to a bar in Ray's bathtub, insisting he have sex with her; Abby is set on inspecting the very townhouse; Ray returns to Compton for adoption papers, stepping into a crime scene; he facilitates a divorce settlement; Mickey drops in on Ezra, and, to Ray's dismay, Ezra has no memory of what either said; Ray breaks into Agent Miller's place and finds his, Ezra, and Lee's pictures on a wall of suspects. Outside Ray's ken, Bunchy buys a bicycle, then a house; Conor drinks and Bridget necks with Marvin; and, Terry wonders what Frances isn't telling him.
Ray is adrift from his family, estranged from Ezra, and his latest celebrity client is a nobody with tawdry sense. But after he's called to the funeral of a close friend. A wealthy family enlists Ray their kidnapped son. And he finds himself enmeshed with an entirely new class of people. Meanwhile, a retired Mickey stumbles upon a new enterprise. Unforgiven by Ray and rejected by Bridget, Abby encounters a new friend on the streets of Los Angeles. Running the fite club has given Bunchy confidence in certain arenas, but when it comes to collecting membership dues from an intimidating troupe of luchadores, he loses his nerve. Abby, furious with Ray's silence and his suspected infidelity, donates some of Ray's suits to a thrift shop. Bridget befriends Marvin, a neighbor kid about to be adopted by a rap star; Ray is making the arrangements. Ray also sets in motion a plan to get Mickey back in prison. Ray takes Bunchy to receive his million-dollar settlement for being abused by a priest; under Mickey's influence, Bunchy refuses to make Ray his guardian. Ray sends a limo to bring Abby to Ezra's gala party he unveils plans to build a hospital wing in honor of his dead wife. Is domestic peace at hand? A squirrelly FBI agent pulls Mickey's chain.
Ray forces Mickey to return to Los Angeles, where the city's FBI chief puts Mickey on parole, and takes full credit for finding and shooting Sully Sullivan. Meanwhile, a Boston reporter investigates Sully's death; and Ray gets a parole officer to take over Mickey's case.
Ashley asks Ray to help a friend who beat up a waiter. Meanwhile, Ray makes contact with Volcheck to seek his help in taking down Cochran; Mickey plans a meeting with a movie executive; and Bridget argues with Ray and Abby about the earring from Marvin.
Ashley's stalker, Bob Lepecka, returns and makes trouble for Steve Knight. Meanwhile, Cochran is officially nominated for the FBI directorship and tries to protect himself from the vetting process; Kate confronts Ray about his past; and Mickey gathers a team for his pot store robbery.
Tension runs high when the whole Donovan family come together for Conor's birthday. Meanwhile, Ashley's stalker returns and her boyfriend demands that Ray get rid of him; and Ray sees Cookie Brown when he shows up to take Bridget out for a night.
An FBI agent learns Ray and Mickey took part in killing Sully Sullivan and demands that Ray bring in his father as Season 2 begins. However, Mickey is in Mexico setting up a fight and isn't eager to leave. Meanwhile, Ray rescues a client from a violent confrontation; Terry obsesses over his ex-girlfriend; and Conor assaults a classmate.
