Sandy is voted "Man of the Year" by Riviera magazine due to his work for the hospital, but at the same time is having some trouble with the law for his connections to Henry Griffin when Mr. Griffin's mob connections are made public. Although Seth is happily back together with Summer, he is not out of sorrow: His mom struggles with alcoholism again and Sandy finds out that Seth lied about being accepted into Brown University. Meanwhile, Marissa visits Kaitlin at her posh boarding school, who needs her help to get out of trouble with another student. After Ryan brought Volchok to the hospital after he nearly and inadvertently tried to kill him, Volchok wants Ryan to help him with some illegal activities; which includes some burglary and the theft of a car, otherwise he will bust Ryan to the cops.

Fortunately, Seth continues to be supportive of the new Summer through all her endeavors. Similarly, Ryan empathizes with Taylor and surprisingly helps her out of her bind when her French husband's lawyer arrives wanting Taylor to sign annulments papers. Meanwhile, Julie and Kaitlin both make attempts to stay out of trouble, but both bad girls cannot resist the temptation to add a little spice to their lives with their flirtations.

Wanting to move on with their lives, Ryan sets Seth up with Lindsay. Seth sets Ryan up with Alex (Alexandra) Kelly, the punk rock teenage manger of the Bait Shop. But during their first outing, Ryan has eyes for Lindsay, while Seth has eyes for Alex. Meanwhile, Julie throws her weight around as the new CEO of Newport Group and gets on Kirsten's nerves fast. Sandy also discusses more of Caleb's case and about charges of him bribing a city official named Renee Wheeler, whom Caleb claims it's for a trust fund.

Caleb spends the night in jail until Sandy bails him out, and all of Orange Country finds out about his troubles via a front page newspaper spread. Seth realizes that he really does make everything about him, as Summer previously suggested, so he decides that he needs to become selfless, for the greater good of man, and just in case Summer might want him back. He decides to get tickets to a Walkmen show at The Bait Shop, but they're sold out. So he accepts a manual labor job at from the co-manager, a punk rock princess by the name of Alex, of cleaning toilets to be rewarded tickets so that he can give them to Summer and Zack to prove his selflessness to her. Summer realizes that Zack is the perfect guy, though he may not be perfect for her, and agrees to arrange a lunch where Zack can meet her Dad, hoping it will go better than when Seth met him last year. Ryan gets assigned a lab partner in his AP Physics class, a new girl named Lindsey, though he's already met her. Earlier that day he had spilled coffee all over her shirt, accidentally slammed his elbow into her nose and spilled the belongings in her purse all over the floor. They are less than thrilled to be working together, but are forced nonetheless. They are given their first assignment, an assignment they are to work on together, but Lindsey distrusts Ryan's level of smarts, assuming he's another dumb, rich kid from Orange Country, and hands the assignment in without consulting Ryan or letting him contribute in the slightest. Kirsten, Sandy, Julie, and Caleb are all fretting over Caleb's current state, and what it is to come if he does get sent to jail. But Sandy is hot on the trail of finding ways to get Caleb out of hot water. And Sandy has plenty of time to deal with the matter now that he has quit his job at his top law firm; because the partners agreed that as long as he was representing Caleb, he wasn't working there. Later, Seth finds out this his new boss, tough girl Alex, is only 17, got kicked out of three different high schools and her parents' house. He earns the tickets, and gives them to Summer, but Zack convinces her to go to the concert alone, see Seth and talk about their status. Everything is going fine and a friendship is forming, until he tries to kiss her, and ruins it all. Caleb announces to Kirsten and Sandy that he will be stepping down from his position in the Newport Group, and appointing a new CEO-Julie. Kirsten is furious, and quits, saying she refuses to have Julie as her boss. Caleb convinces her to come back, saying it's just a figure-head position, and Kirsten will continue to run the show as Chief Financial Officer. Seth goes to talk to Marissa about his problems with Summer, because he's burned out anyone else who was willing to listen. She tells him it would be best just to apologize if he really wants a friendship with her. He shows up at the restaurant where she's having lunch with her father, but is crushed to see Zack also joining them, and having an enjoyable time. Meanwhile, Marissa sees Ryan at Harbor doing his Physics homework with Lindsey, laughing, flirting, and smiling. Turns out, Seth and Marissa are floating in the same boat of loneliness and making several attempts of not sinking.

Seth tries to pull off a magnanimous gesture for Summer by taking a job at the Bait Shop nightclub by getting rock concert tickets for him Summer and Zach. Ryan has a couple of literal run-ins with the new transfer student, Lindsay Gardner, and it becomes more complicated when they become class Physics lab partners and share some romantic chemistry. Meanwhile, the embattled Caleb names Julie as Newport Group's CEO, which sparks protests with Kirsten, who becomes the financial officer, while Sandy discusses more of the bribery charges that Caleb is facing, leading him to quit his law firm. Also, Marissa confides in Jimmy about her fears of being alone and not wanting to be like her amoral and soulless mother Julie.

Therefore, Seth's date for the prom is the visiting Anna, who gives him advice on how he can win back Summer. Ryan's date is Theresa, who tries to explain why she lied to him two years ago about having a miscarriage, while Marissa's date is Volchok, who causes a lot of trouble and by that raises Ryan's anger level, because he still feels responsible for Marissa.

When Sandy learns about this, he uses his legal skills and poker-face tactics to play hardball with Dean Hess to let Ryan back at Harbor High, while Seth and Summer confront Taylor. Also, Charlotte finds out about Julie's downfall (now living at a flea-bag motel) and uses this to recruit her as her co-conspirator to plan another scam to try to rip off Kirsten and the Newport community.

Also, Summer wants to take her relationship with Zach to the next level and she meets his mother, Elaine, and his sister, Abby, for the first time in which the superficial Summer finds herself a fish out of the water with their broad-minded personalities.

Things take another when when Caleb makes a marriage proposal to Julie, which sparks anger and a feeling of betrayal for Luke who gets behind the wheel of his car and has a near-fatal accident. Also, Marissa, and Sandy and Jimmy each strike deals with Caleb in which he forces Marissa to live with him and Julie after they are married in exchange for helping Jimmy and Sandy with their business adventure.

Kirsten is still upset and confides in Julie about her problems and wishes her marriage would go back to normal and for Rebecca's case to be over with. Meanwhile, Seth thinks he's lost Summer forever until Summer is unable to hide from her feelings once and for all, when she considers leaving Newport with Zach for a trip to Europe. Marissa moves out of the Cooper-Nichol mansion and moves in with Alex after she tells her mother about Alex being her girlfriend.

Also, Matt continues dating Maya in order to influence her father to give more funding for their hospital, while Kirsten begins to think Sandy is being corrupted by his business deals with Matt over Maya.

With the help of the school principle, Dr. Kim, they try to get the board of trustees to debate whether to let Marissa back at Harbor. Taylor even is happy to help out Seth, Summer and the rest of the gang with their cause, but finds complications when Taylor's mother, Veronica, is part of the board of trustees, and Taylor does not have the nerve to stand up and say "no" to her stern and mean-spirited mother. Matt also tells Sandy that he's found some dirt on the leader of the board of trustees involving Marissa's case to return to Harbor. Meanwhile, Johnny asks Marissa to attend a concert with him to celebrate his successfully knee surgery, but she gets sidetracked by her old friends lobbying for her return to Harbor. Also, Julie continues hanging around Dr. Roberts to share stories about their messed up lives.

But things take a sudden turn when Ryan and Luke stumble upon a secret of Luke's father's homosexuality. The next day, the news of Luke's father is the talk of the whole school and the town resulting in negative reactions to Luke from his friends, in which he blames Ryan who denies telling anyone about his father being gay. Meanwhile, Kristen continues to avoid Jimmy over their disastrous Thanksgiving dinner encounter, while Sandy has some advice for Jimmy over his legal problems which doesn't set well with Julie over selling their house to pay off the money he lost. Julie and Dr. Roberts return from their cruise at sea and announce their engagement, leading to fireworks from both Summer and Marissa when Julie moves out of her trailer and into Dr. Roberts' house. Meanwhile, Marissa seeks solace with Volchok and his bad company surfer friends which causes a riff between her and Summer. Ryan tries to move on by dating Sadie, but finds himself not over Marissa. Seeing the specter of Marissa hanging over Ryan, Sadie decides to leave Newport to move back to Portland without saying goodbye to Ryan. Kirsten surprises Seth with a night out to an AA meeting, and Sandy's woes with Matt continue when Henry Griffin continues to insist that Sandy fire Matt from Newport Group for dating his daughter. But this leads to Matt getting beat up after unwisely trying to blackmail Mr. Griffin about some less-than-legal business dealings he's in.

Meanwhile, Summer tells Seth that she feels that he should find something in his life that he really cares about, whereas Kirsten is having second thoughts about raising another child in the uptight community of Newport after she meets Holly Fisher and other 'Newpsie' women at a yoga class, all of whom are no older than their 20s. Also, Kaitlin continues to resent Frank Atwood's presence around the house with her mother. But at the end, something unexpected happens even though it's been predicted.

Taylor has a dream 'present' in mind for her 19th birthday: a declaration of love from darling Ryan, so they can study in Berkely together. Despite lots of hints he says nothing, was about to but changes his mind when Sandy advises caution and since he doesn't want to commit fully just to say how much he enjoys her company. At Summer's instigation Taylor now resorts to 'truth serum': getting lover-boy drunk with coq-au-vin -her first home-cooked dinner for Ryan- and since that doesn't suffice a drinking game, but she ends up further in the wind, so she isn't quite sure if Ryan actually said the dreaded words. He regrets them instantly when she replies now they can go to Berkely together, which is a four years commitment. Taylor remembers in panic she wrote a letter declining a Berkely scholarship when ma mumbles she found and posted it, but her story is good enough to get 'federal property' back from the mailman. Now all Taylor's hope hangs on Ryan's present, but Seth made him doubt whether to give her the very fancy binding of poem translations by her hand he collected... Meanwhile Summer keeps Seth to his word when he claims the ecologist movies they saw at a festival are so amateurish he could make some, and a dead-simple 'satire' "six hours in the pool" doesn't count, so he starts filming Ryan... Mother nature has a nasty present in store, which shouldn't be one but nobody took the n-th earthquake-predictions seriously. Meanwhile Kaitlin tries to discredit Ryan's dad Frank in ma's eyes, as she still prefers Bullit as potential step-dad, playing dirty even by their standards; the Cohen parents have a reunion dinner with Jason Spitz.

Meanwhile, Kirsten and Julie decide to start their own dating service, but the evil Veronica Townsend brings more trouble when she blackmails them to get her up on a date with Summer's father. Ironically, the only person who believes Ryan is Luke, who agrees to help Ryan make a background check on Oliver to find any dirt on him. But when Luke reveals evidence to Marissa, and then Sandy, that some of Oliver's references from his old school are false, they refuse to believe Luke, especially after learning that he's been talking with Ryan. Meanwhile, Jimmy thinks his past will impair his ability to work in the business field again. Seth continues dating Anna who thinks Summer's presence around them is not a good thing. Things come to a head when Oliver begins losing his bland, self-control to lie when Marissa comes by to his penthouse to tell him that she not interested in a relationship with him. The re-modeling continues to invade the Cohen household, and the re-modelers continue to get in everyone's way. Archie, the head re-modeler, agrees to take Seth and Ryan to school via the back of his truck, as Sandy and Kirsten both have to leave early to get to work. Upon hopping out of the back of Archie's truck, Seth and Ryan immediately lay their eyes upon Marissa and Summer. Marissa runs up to Ryan to hug him, as Summer walks away, completely avoiding Seth. Seth catches up with Summer, she talks to him just long enough to tell him she has a ew "boyfriend." Hailey, Kirsten's sister and Jimmy's new girlfriend, learns of a great job opportunity-in Japan. She jumps at the chance to take the job, as it may lead to a new, amazing career for her, despite her having to leave Jimmy to live on his yacht alone. Ryan gets his new schedule from the guidance counselor at Harbor High, but she pushes him to choose classes more suitable for him, and classes that will best prepare him for college. She gives him an assignment, to take a small notebook and write down everything he likes about his classes, everything he doesn't like, and why. Still at school, Seth decides to start a Comic Book Club at school, and asks Ryan to pass out fliers for him. Summer takes Marissa back to her house to pick up her car, and they see DJ, the Cooper-Nichol household's yard guy doing some hedge work along the driveway. It is then revealed that DJ and Marissa have been an item all summer, as the two kiss and make-out in her bedroom. Marissa spikes her Latte at school, and Summer learns about her summer-long tryst with DJ. Elsewhere, Seth and Ryan commence the first Comic Book Club meeting, only to be joined by Zack, a water polo player. Seth immediately strikes up a friendship with Zack over there shared love of comic books, up until Seth finds out that it is Zack that is Summer's new boyfriend. Seth is outraged that Summer is dating the water-polo-playing version of him. Later, Caleb tells Sandy that the D.A. has finally come up with enough evidence to charge him with bribing certain city officials. Sandy has to tell Julie that Caleb will be indicted, and she warns Sandy that he had better figure out a way to save Cal, or it won't be just her kids that will be left with nothing. Back in the Cohen household, Ryan gets bored and begins drawing architecture sketches of the Cohen's family room and kitchen, and realizes why it is that Archie and his crew are taking so long to finish the job. It's the sketches Ryan drew that help his guidance counselor to realize that being in some advanced math and science classes are what are going to help him be excepted to a college where he can major in architecture. Harbor's annual Kick Off Carnival is just around the corner, and Seth is dateless, Summer is going with Zack, and Ryan has asked Marissa to go. That was until he sees her kissing DJ in her driveway as he was pulling in. He confronts her at the carnival, but she feels she has done nothing wrong. Meanwhile at the carnival, Seth tries to climb on top of a hot dog stand as another grand romantic gesture to win Summer back. His plan fails, and in a later confrontation Summer tells Seth he doesn't like her, he likes the chase, and says at that point, there's nothing he can do to win her. He had his chance, he sailed away, and he lost her. But Seth is determined, and he refuses to let go. The lads return back to the Cohen house, where Kirsten, Caleb, and Sandy are eating Chinese takeout, just as the D.A. shows up to finally arrest Caleb.

Back in the real world, Seth tries to arrange his annual Christmukka party and then tries to move it to the hospital where the comatose Ryan and Taylor are. Also, Julie and Katilin are planning to go to Riverside to visit Julie's parents, but get detoured when they try to stop Taylor's insensitive mother from leaving town for the holidays.

In the third act, it all comes to a head when all the pieces come together with everyone in the kitchen of the Cohen house. Kirsten is devastated to learn Lindsay is her sister, Julie is angry, Seth's holiday is ruined and Lindsay wants nothing to do with Ryan or any of his family. Ryan talks with Kirsten, while Seth talks to newly-known Aunt. The new family member is introduced in a loving, caring way by Sandy and Kirsten.

Kirsten's outgoing and spoiled younger sister Hailey Nichol, notorious for not doing anything with her life, returns home and asks to stay for New Year's Eve. Although getting along fine with everyone, she shows her true colors when she throws a destructive New Year's Eve party at the house when Sandy and Kristen are out and locks both Ryan and Seth in the guest house. Meanwhile, Sandy and Kirsten get lost while traveling to a restaurant for dinner, and, thinking they're in a rut, find themselves out of their environment at a swingers house party. The mysterious Oliver Trask, a charming young teenager Marissa met in her therapist's waiting room, takes advantage of a mild quarrel between her and Ryan to cast his spell on her and invite her and her friends to his New Year's Eve party at his parents' posh penthouse. Also there in attendance are Summer and Anna who talk about Seth and decide to find him to make him choose which one of them he wants to be with.

Summer calls off the break up with Seth to find out what his problem is. After Seth breaks it off with Summer, Summer and Taylor team up to find out if Seth still loves Sum. After he declines his love, Summer is heartbroken. Meanwhile, Marissa is dealing with her controlling mother's influence on her as she hangs with Volchok and helps Heather. Also, Sandy is still trying to rescue Matt from Griffin's huge mess. It may cost Sandy his marriage, but if he doesn't do anything...it will cost Matt's life.

Ryan travels to New Mexico to visit his mother, now working as a diner waitress, to invite her to his high school graduation, but finds problems thinking that she's fallen off the wagon again. But Ryan gets some confidence and inspiration from Chloe, a waitress and co-worker the diner, who tells him to give his mother another chance. Back in Newport, Seth declines his love for Summer to make her leave for Brown where she draws the wrong conclusions for his moody behavior. Summer then teams up with Taylor to find out what Seth is hiding. Julie helps Marissa out of a bad situation with her downward spiral with Volchok. Also, Sandy finally solves his work problems with Matt and Henry Griffin, but hurts Kirsten in the process when she learns that Sandy lied and deceived both Matt and Mr. Griffin to save Matt from being killed, and to force Mr. Griffin to accept his demands for the hospital funding.

Ryan and Sadie try to decide what Ryan will do after high school when he is accepted into Berkeley. Marissa is also accepted into Berkely, but does not know if she wants to leave Newport. Meanwhile, Sandy tries to resolve the conflict between the unscrupulous, and mob-connected Henry Griffin and the hotshot Matt, where Mr. Griffin tries to bribe Sandy into not filing charges against him. Accepted to a college in France, a joyful Taylor holds a college acceptance bonfire party where Summer and Marissa try to fix their friendship problems, and Sadie decides not to move to Berkey with Ryan after seeing that it will hold him back and she leaves for Portland, for good.

Meanwhile, Julie and Kirsten get a contract for their new catering business where Julie latches onto a potential client. It's been three months since Ryan left to live with the pregnant Theresa in Chino, and Seth subsequently sailed off to Portland to live with Luke and his divorced, gay father. With one week before school will start, Kirsten is furious that Sandy has yet to bring Seth back to Newport. Sandy says that they can't bring him back kicking and screaming, because that will only make him want to run away again. Also in the Cohen household, there's a group of re-modelers led by macho man Archie, creating a new family room and re-designed kitchen, a project that apparently was used to distract Kirsten from going from having two sons in the house, to none. Meanwhile, Summer tells Marissa that she's been hanging out with a new kid, but refuses to get close to him, saying she'll never get close to a boy again. Marissa knows just how she feels. She misses Ryan but just can't bring herself to call him to see how he's doing. Caleb's paranoia about being indicted is growing all summer long. Back at the Cohen household, Kirsten calls Seth in Portland and begs him to come home. Seth refuses, saying Newport is an awful place. Sandy decides to fly to Portland to possibly use reverse psychology to convince Seth to come home. He also visits Ryan in Chino to deliver him a plane ticket to Portland, thinking maybe the two could deliver an unbeatable one-two punch combination. It's apparent to everyone in Chino, including Theresa, that Ryan is miserable, and doesn't consider it to be his home anymore. Before heading up to Portland, Sandy speaks with Caleb in a parking garage, as Cal is paranoid his home, the office, and other places might be bugged and the phone lines tapped. Once in Portland, Sandy is shocked to see the level of hostility Seth shows his father. Seth seems content to stay in Portland, and continuing to resent his parents for letting Ryan go, and Ryan for leaving. Back in Newport, Jimmy and Marissa join Kirsten for dinner to keep her company, and Marissa goes into the pool house further fueling her missing Ryan. Sitting on the beach that night, she calls Ryan in Chino, but can't bring herself to say anything, so he lays there listening to her breathe, knowing it's her. Julie tells Marissa she's grounded because she's sick of being ignored. Marissa has a meltdown screaming, crying, and throwing lawn furniture into the pool unable to stand anymore of her evil mother or her evil stepfather. Summer visits the Cohen household with a box of Seth's stuff, telling Kirsten she's there to get rid of anything that ever reminded her of Seth. She dumps the box on the bed, and leaves. Later, just before Sandy leaves Portland he tells Seth that he's fine with him staying in Portland, as long as he knows he's safe and happy. As Sandy is leaving, Ryan is showing up, making his best attempt to convince Seth to go back. It doesn't seem to work until Theresa calls Ryan at Luke's house, and tells him she's lost the baby, saying the doctor couldn't find a heartbeat. Theresa's mother later reveals that Theresa was lying, and she never lost the baby. It's the next morning as Ryan is to leave that the two, Seth and Ryan, decide maybe going back to Newport would be the best thing for the both of them-and the two return to the Cohen household.

Back in Newport, Gordon Bullitt invites reluctant Julie to his New Years Eve Blast Off party, while a mysterious man there, who calls himself Frank, may cause some trouble with Julie over her and Kirsten's dating service New Match, the illegal 'escort' branch of which she agreed with her partner, Gordon's studly son Spencer, to shut down but only after making $40,000 from the festive clientèle. Meanwhile, bored Kaitlyn Cooper ponders her well being.

When they pressure Sandy and Kirsten to visit their old house, where a gay couple now resides there, Kirsten happens to go into labor, and soon, Julie's wedding becomes the scene of the place.

Six months after the earthquake the Cohens are living with the Coopers, Julie's marrying Gordon Bullit, Taylor has gone back to France, and Seth and Summer have spent the time becoming an "old married couple." Taylor comes back for the wedding and sparks between her and Ryan. Ryan and Seth try to get the Cohen's old Berkeley house back and in that process all of Newport ends up in Berkeley. Kirsten gives birth in their old house when they go to visit. Julie moves the wedding to Berkeley so Kirsten can be there. The owners of the Berkeley home, a gay couple, finally agree to sell to the Cohens and they start there new lives there as Seth finally goes off to Rhode Island for college and Ryan to Berkeley, but not before Ryan and Taylor get back together at the wedding. The show ends with a glimpse of their lives after the final episode years from now which includes Sandy teaching at a law school, Seth and Summer's wedding, Julie receiving her college degree, and Ryan working in construction and bringing the show full circle when Ryan meets a lonely and homeless youth sitting near the construction site which reminds Ryan of him as a youngster.

But nothing ever goes as planned when they end up at the Bait Shop, and Ryan goes for a swim after mistakingly thinking a drunk Lindsey has fallen into the sea in which he blames Marissa for encouraging her to drink.

Ryan does not know where he might go to college, while Marissa is persuaded to attend despite knowing her bad reputation. Meanwhile, Johnny's surfing career takes an unfortunate twist when he gets hit by a moving car in a parking lot, and the doctor's diagnosis is that he may not be able to surf again to his injured left leg. Also, Julie finally reveals to Kirsten the secret about the departed Charlotte when she's finally evicted from Charlotte's townhouse and is forced to move into a wretched trailer park.

Its graduation day and nothing could be more perfect; Seth and Summer are back together & Marissa and Ryan aren't together but are tight friends. The core four is getting ready for graduation, and Marissa receives some news from her father. He's asking her to accompany him on a boating trip (which is a job). This involves Marissa sailing away to Greece for a year. The core four decide its best for Marissa, and Julie thinks so too. Meanwhile, Taylor announces to the group of her acceptance into a college in France and it pains her to say goodbye to them, whereas they couldn't be more happier to be rid of her. Ryan's mother, Dawn, also arrives for the graduation ceremony to see him off. Kaitlin arrives as a surprise for grad night, and tells her mom that she was expelled from her school and she will keep her company (so she'll be living with Julie forever). When the graduation ceremony finishes, they have a go-away party for Marissa and a celebration for graduation. Volchok is around trying to get Marissa to talk to him, because he's really in love with her and can't stand the fact that they're not together. The day Marissa is leaving, the core four decide to go the newly remodeled model home, they spend a day there in the pool, talking about everything. When MArissa goes to the airport, Ryan is driving her there, so he'll be the last to say goodbye. The drunk Volchok, and his accomplice Heather, catch up with them and demands to talk to Marissa. Things get out of hand which leads to Volchok ramming them over a cliff. This leads to Marissa dying in Ryan's arms...

In the aftermath of Johnny's untimely death, the gang tries to sort out their problems and face the reality of the situation. Johnny's cousin, Sadie Campbell, arrives in Newport for the funeral. Ryan helps her move into Johnny's house and they to try to get rid of the nasty Kevin Volchok, causing Ryan to question his relationship with Marissa. Meanwhile, Kaitlin's winter break is over, meaning that she must return to her boarding school, just as she gets close to her family. Kaitlin has mixed feelings about going back to school with Justin, but also leaving the trailer park where they live. And in the wake of Newport's latest events, Kirsten and Julie press on with their Valentine's Day party where Sandy and Seth get their Valentine's Day gifts for Kirsten and Summer mixed up. Dr. Roberts professes his love for Julie, while Sandy and Kirsten continue to help Matt work out his arranged relationship with Maya.

At the opening day of the new school year, Ryan doesn't feel like he fits in at his new school of Harbor High, and Luke doesn't make the situation any better when he and his jock friends continue to bully and harass both him and Seth, who doesn't like being at school any more than Ryan. Meanwhile, Sandy accepts a case at his new job, a case that will test his relationship with Kirsten and her father Caleb. Anna and Seth hatch a plan to make Seth feel better with his current situation. Also, Ryan and Luke confront Marissa and force her to choose one of them. On Thanksgiving Day, Ryan ventures to his hometown in Chino to help his imprisoned brother, Trey, with some business he has, while Marissa tags along with Ryan to get a look at the neighborhood where he was born and raised, but it brings out some bad situations and unpleasant trips down memory lane for Ryan. Back in Newport, Kristen invites Caleb and Julie over for Thanksgiving dinner where Seth takes the player role of playing both Summer and Anna. But he does not play it well, leading to both of the girls running into each other and learning about Seth's two-timing act.

It's Ryan's 18th b-day and the Cohens decide to throw him a party at the Bait shop. Ryan wonders about if he should invite Marissa or not, trying not to give her the wrong idea. Meanwhile, Summer confronts Julie about her knowing Julie and Dr.Roberts' fling. Julie then confronts Marissa about it, and surprisingly Marissa is OK with it. While Marissa tries to get over her break-up with Ryan, Kevin Volchek seems to keep being in the way, and Matt has to rescue her from Volchek's attempt for a talk.Ryan and Sadie gets closer. Marissa looks for Volchek to apologize to him, and comes by the old house that her and Ryan spent a night in. Marissa falls down the stairs and Volchek is there to rescue her. Volchek gets closer to Marissa; and they talk a lot, Marissa gets invited to Ryan's party, but she decides not to go and heads to the beach instead. There she runs into Volchek, and they spend the night at the beach; together. Ryan's birthday goes well; The episode ends with Ryan and Sadie dancing at Ryan's party, and Summer and Seth dancing together, and Marissa and Volchek at the beach, with Marissa leaning over Volchek's shoulder .. you know what that means -- dunh dunh dunh!!! :)

Summer and Julie talk about the latter's relationship with Dr. Roberts when they suspect that he wants to take Julie on a cruise to Mexico. Meanwhile, Sandy travels to New Mexico to the local jail to visit Dawn Atwood and to ask her to attend Ryan's 18th birthday party being held at the Bait Shop. In the aftermath of his breakup with Marissa, Ryan debates whether or not to move on with Sadie after he finished restoring Johnny's house. Volchok insists a little too much to have a talk with Marissa, and Matt has to rescue her. Later, she decides not to go to Ryan's birthday party, goes to the beach to join Volchok.

When Marissa and Summer run into Grady Bridges, the star of Summer's favorite TV series "The Valley", he invites them and their friends to a party in Los Angeles and they accept. Meanwhile, Ryan and Seth discover the romantic connection between Luke and Marissa's mother in which Ryan persuades Luke to break it off before Marissa finds out. During the L.A. party, Grady tries to woo Summer away from Seth, who gets an eyeful of a wealthy socialite lady, while Ryan and Marissa run into Hailey Nichol whom is now working as a stripper and they call upon Jimmy for help. Back in Newport, Sandy and Jimmy approach Caleb to ask for his help to arrange a get-together for some of Newport Group's wealthy business elite to get funds to open their own restaurant.

But Charlotte's con-artist boyfriend, Glen, forces her to go ahead with their scam to rip off Kristen anyway. Julie's mansion get repossessed, leaving her with nothing but a broken heart. Also, Taylor sets into motion a crafty power play in planning Harbor High's Homecoming Dance in which she successfully dethrones Summer as the school committee chairman by tricking her into admitting to Dean Hess a misdeed with Seth. Later, Summer learns an interesting secret about Taylor and Dean Hess and why he is going around punishing and suspending everyone that Taylor dislikes...

Oliver plans a new trip for the group by inviting them to Palm Springs for the weekend to play golf and travel around. But things don't go well for everyone, except for Oliver when his erratic behavior begins showing itself to Ryan and Luke, but Marissa brushes it off as just playful behavior. But when Ryan tries to tell Marissa that Oliver is not what he appears to be, he gets left out in the cold. Summer tries to plant herself into a "friendship" with Seth and Anna leading to a competition of wills over both of them. Meanwhile in Newport, Jimmy and Sandy decide to go into business together of opening their own restaurant while Caleb and Julie return from a two-month vacation in Europe. Also, Kirsten and Hailey continue to butt heads over Hailey's irresponsible behavior leading her to finally move out of the Cohen household.

But things take another turn when they get stranded in the mall after hours. Meanwhile, Caleb tags along to vent his frustration when Sandy tries to make amends with Kirsten by searching for her wedding ring or even a grand gesture that will take her back to when Sandy first proposed. Alex begins to learn that Marissa might not be as into her as she thought. Also, Kirsten and Julie call an editor for their new magazine, Newport Living, but at the same time Julie's Riverside past catches up to her in the form of a former boyfriend with an incriminating video tape of her.
