When they find a cat on their door step they take it in but unfortunately pets are not allowed in the building so they hide it. But when Furley sees it he takes a liking to it and takes it in. But when an inspector his brother sent to see if all the rules of the building are enforced he hides it. At the same time the cat's owner a little girl comes looking for it and when jack asks for it Furley tells him that he took the cat to the pound. So they each get a cat for the girl. When the inspector arrives they try to hide the cats.

Jack finds a present the girls hid. And when he reads the card, he assumes it's a gift for him in honor of their anniversary being roommates. Jack decides he has to get something for them but is broke. So he asks Larry for the money he owes him. But he doesn't have it. So Larry tells him that he moonlights as an escort and offers him his latest job. Jack reluctantly accepts. And the woman is after more than an escort. When the girls see him with her, Jack doesn't tell him what's going on. And when they ask Larry he tells him a story of Jack feeling undesirable.

Jack and Terri are at the bar and a guy tries to hit on her and she rebuffs him. When he refuses to take no for an answer, Jack tells him to back off. That's when he manhandles Jack and Terri uses for self defense techniques she knows on the guy. Jack feels humiliated and asks Terri to teach him what she knows. When Jack hears what sounds like a burglary he goes down and uses what Terri taught him. He asks Furley to call the police but it turns out the guy is a policeman and he arrests Jack and throws him in jail.

Janet and Chrissy try to get Jack to join their gym. But he's not interested until he meets their trainer, Shirley. He then goes to the gym to hook up with her. However, the other trainer at the gym happens to be Shirley's brother, Harvey, who is extremely overprotective. Upon learning of Jack's interest in his sister, Harvey puts him through a rigorous program. Jack and Shirley agree to meet at her place. When Harvey learns of their date, he sets out to get Jack. But Janet and Chrissy intercept and invites him to their apartment. But Shirley decides to meet Jack at the apartment instead.

Janet's sister Jenny pays a visit and will be staying in Jack's bedroom during her stay while Jack sleeps on the sofa. Janet asks Jack to take Jenny out and show her the sights. Janet, though, is very over-protective of her sister and wants Jack to make sure that their night out would just be a simple little date. When Janet and Jenny were out late, Janet gets upset. She gets even more upset when she catches Jenny sleeping in the same bed with Jack, who wandered half-asleep into his bedroom in the middle of the night by force of habit.

An old friend of Jack's from the Navy shows up. Mr. Angelino shows up looking for Jack but Jack is not around. So Angelino tells Jack's friend he wants to bring some people to Jack's bistro and asks him to tell Jack what he wants. But he tells Jack that it's for something else as oppose to what Angelino wants. So when Jack throws a surprise which upsets them, Jack's friend bails him out so Angelino tells Jack to give him a job which is what he is angling for. So Jack and the girls with Larry's help decide to pull the same thing on him. But Larry is unable to make it so Furley has to step in.

The Ropers return. It begins with Helen showing up after having a fight with Stanley. She looks for a little support from the kids. When she says she's tired, they tell her that her old apartment is available because Furley is away. So she goes to bed, but Furley comes back and hops into bed not knowing Helen is there. Stanley comes looking for Helen. When they tell Stanley where she is, he finds her in bed with Furley.

Jack is suckered into taking a little puppy off the hands of his friend Larry. Unfortunately, this breaks Roper's rules of "no pets or children." Jack must then find a way to hide the pup until he can find someone else to take care of it. In the meantime, Chrissy begins sleepwalking. Plus, Mrs. Roper's birthday is coming up and Stanley must find a present for her.

Jack's dating a wealthy girl. He goes with her to a party her family is throwing. When he arrives he sees that they're gambling. Her father gives Jack some chips to bet with. When he loses he freaks out that he can't pay it. So he goes home, Larry says he has a system. So they go back to the party. But what they don't know is that they're just playing for fun.

A homeless man named Leo Moran randomly shows up at the kids' apartment, hoping to find a place to stay. Feeling sympathetic, the kids offer to let Leo stay for a few days until he can find a permanent place to live. However, he proves to be a bit of a burden to the kids, especially Jack. Jack has been dating Scarlet O'Hara-type girl Nancy Norwood and Leo gets in the way during their date at the apartment.

When a critic comes to Jack's restaurant and stays only for a moment. Jack feeling that the guy was going to pan the restaurant, on advice from Larry writes a mad letter expressing his disgust. After he mails it, the critic calls him telling him thanks for a good time. So Jack goes to the man's office to try and get the letter before he sees it.

Janet arranges for Jack to teach the wife of someone she knows how to cook. When Terri comes home she sees the woman changing her clothes and says that Jack is teaching her and she assumes Jack is giving her sex lessons. So she informs them that she's moving out. She then brings one of the doctors from the hospital who wants to rent an apartment for his daughter. They assume that the man is going to "keep" at the apartment. So when the man goes there again Jack and Janet do things to the man, And when the man whose wife Jack is teaching shows up and Terri talks to him and when he says he's there to watch she freaks out at the man.

Furley goes to Jack, Janet and Chrissy and tells them that a guy he knows is coming and he always felt inferior to him because he's successful. He can't tell him that he works for his brother and that he's single. He asks if one of the girls would be willing to pretend to be his wife. Chrissy agrees. But when the guy asks if he could spend the night; Chrissy has to stay. And things get out of hand when Chrissy boyfriend shows up looking for her.

Mrs. Roper wants her husband to sell his old car which is practically a lemon. The guys (Jack, Janet, and Crissy) needing a car offer to buy it and Mr. Roper sells it without fully disclosing to them what it's condition is. But when a used car salesman tells him that the model is a classic and he can sell it for more 10 k, Mrs Roper tells him to ask the guys top sell the car and give him a cut. But Roper doesn't want to.

Trying to impress his "Southern Belle" girlfriend, Arabella, Jack wants to serenade her. He doesn't sing well, so he lip-syncs while Larry does the singing. The problem begins when he throws the rock with a dinner invitation into the wrong girls' apartment window. When Berniece shows up(who is heavy-set and not as pretty as Arabella), Jack is shocked. That's when they decide that he should serenade her and invite her to the apartment. Jack does it with Larry singing for him. But the woman who arrives is not Arabella but a frumpy woman named Berniece. He can't find the heart to tell her he made a mistake but when Arabella shows up he tries to tell her.

Dean Travers offers Jack a teaching position at a cooking class and informs him his niece, Betty Jean, will attend and will need special attention in the learning process. When Janet wants to attend as well, Jack welcomes her but informs her that no special attention will be given. However, Janet is upset when she notices that Jack has been doing just the opposite to Betty Jean. After class, Betty Jean seduces Jack in hopes of getting an A and, unfortunately, Janet thinks that Jack wants to make a date out of her.

Chrissy is hesitant, as the arrangement would mean sharing the same bedroom with Jack.

Jack learns that an ultra conservative minister is trying to keep his restaurant from getting it's wine license. Mr. Angelino tells Jack he knows the man and the reason is because the restaurant was once a hangout for hookers. So Jack has to try and convince the minister that the restaurant is respectable. So he asks Janet and Terri to come and dress conservatively. But things get hairy when an amorous newlywed couple who are waiting to go on their honeymoon come in and start making out. And Larry's date turns wild after he gets her drunk.

Mr. Furley informs them that he heard loud, banging noises from their apartment earlier and Mike the Bartender mentions that he spotted a teary Cindy getting into a car with an older man. Jack and Janet also found a half-smoked cigar in the ashtray in their apartment. Therefore, with all these clues, they suspect that Cindy has been kidnapped.

When Crissy's boss asks her to look for a caterer for a party she is throwing at the office. And she recommends Jack. When she tells Jack, he is elated except for the fact he doesn't have enough money. The girls suggest he use the rent money and he can use the money that he will get paid with to pay the rent. So they agree to it. But at the party, Crissy is being hit on by a lecherous man. Jack comes in and does something. He later learns that he is the President of the company and after what happened refuses to pay Jack. Crissy's boss knows he is a creep and only wished that his wife would catch him in the act. So the guys decide to set him up.

New neighbor Leslie Bennington from England moves in next door to Jack, Janet and Terri. Janet and Terri are charmed by Leslie's sophisticated personality and the three went out on several dates. However, Jack is suspicious of Leslie and thinks he is putting on an act in front of the girls. One night, Jack overhears an apparent commotion between Leslie and a female through his bedroom wall. As a result, Jack suspects that Leslie is the escaped jewel thief from London that he read about in the paper.

This later proves a challenge for both of them as Grace, a girl whom Jack has been dating, shows up at the apartment, and Chrissy is tempted with a piece of chocolate cake from Jack.

Jack's bringing the rent to the Ropers and they are in the midst of a heated discussion. It seems like Helen is upset Stanley is not living up to his promise to bring her to Las Vegas, He says he doesn't they money. He mentions that Helen wanted this jacket they saw in a store and Jack thinks he should buy it to appease her. So he gives Jack the rent money to buy it. It's all wrapped up but Chrissy sees it and thinks it's her birthday present. When Helen sees it she doesn't want it so Roper tells Jack he needs to give him the money he gave him. Jack tries to tell Chrissy but can't. So how will he get the money.

Mr. Furley complains to Jack, Janet and Chrissy that while he was visiting his brother Bart's office to give him the rent receipts that were overdue, he humiliates him in front of Nancy, Bart's secretary that Mr. Furley is fond of. Feeling down, the kids try to console him. While discussing ways to cheer Mr. Furley up, Jack overhears him on the phone talking about "taking gas." As a result, the kids think that Mr. Furley is contemplating suicide.

Before they leave the apartment, Jack falls down the stairs and breaks his leg. Janet's prized pen she received as a graduation gift is missing, and Jack saw Chrissy take money out of his room. Therefore, they suspect that Chrissy might be a kleptomaniac. Later, when Jack and Janet noticed that Chrissy came home wearing a shawl that belonged to Mrs. Roper, they panic and attempt to hide the shawl from Mr. Roper, who was fixing something in the kids' kitchen. Jack and Janet then sit Chrissy down, hoping to get to the root of the problem.

Jack, Janet and Chrissy have been on placed on high alert when Mr. Furley threatens to evict them due to excessive noises they have been creating (door slamming, pots and pans dropping, etc). Meanwhile, Jack saves a man named Lyle Wormold at a restaurant from choking. Grateful, Mr. Wormold offers Jack and the girls a penthouse apartment to live in, rent-free for one year. Therefore, the kids play final tricks on Mr. Furley before their anticipated move.

Jack says he can't but when he mentions he's a chef, he says Jack can pay him back by teaching wife how to cook. The woman arrives and hits on Jack.

Jack gets a job working on a cruise ship and can take someone with him. He considers one of his girlfriends but Janet and Chrissy were hoping that he would ask one of them. And they think he wants a playmate. But he says he doesn't want them to feel like he prefers one over the other. So they decide to find a way to pick who will go. They play games and when that doesn't work out. They decide to let whoever Furley first speaks to, to be the one who goes. And when he speaks to Janet Chrissy wallows which makes Janet reconsider. Eventually Lana convinces them that neither of them should go only because she wants to go with him.

Chrissy gets hired to type up the diary of a person named "Wanda X". Jack and Janet read it and they are shocked with its rather X-rated stories of Wanda's affairs with various men. Unfortunately, Roper finds the pages that Chrissy has typed and now thinks that she is a nymphomaniac. Worse yet, he thinks that she is in love with him and wants to have an affair with him.

When Mr. Furley catches Jack kissing new girlfriend Bobby Trilling, Jack tells him that Bobby is actually a man. Hoping to "convert" Jack into liking girls, Mr. Furley plans to coach him. However, what he doesn't know is that if he is successfully "converted," he would have to be evicted.

Jack goes to apply for a chef job at a restaurant. But upon arriving, the owner leaves and Jack answers the phone and takes a message from a guy saying he can't make it. When the owner comes back, he vents at being frustrated of having to interview inexperienced chefs. That's when Jack mentions the name of the one who called and the owner assumes Jack is him, a renowned chef. Jack doesn't correct him. What Jack doesn't know is that there a lot of people out to get man he is pretending to be and they show up at the restaurant.

The kids are planning a party and prepared loads of food and wine for the occasion. When Mr. Roper spotted all the food, he forbids them from having the event. Chrissy then appeals to Mrs. Roper and invites her to the party, who agrees to attend. When that didn't appease Mr. Roper, he sabotages the party and turn away all of the invitees. Furious, Mrs. Roper packs her bags and leaves him.

Reverend Snow is up for an offer as the new minister for the Santa Monica Church. This is initially great news for Chrissy when her parents would be able to move closer to her. Unfortunately, Reverend Snow tells Chrissy that the recommendation board would never approve of three kids living together; therefore, she is forced to move out. However, Jack and Janet try to prevent Chrissy from leaving.

Larry invites Jack to go with to the race track. Jack tells the girls about it and they give him money to put down a bet for them. Chrissy picks the horses which are long shots. But they win and Jack comes home with over a thousand dollars. They agree to share it but when the girls buy expensive and needless things that's when they all turn on each other. Eventually it gets so bad that they decide to go see a therapist to deal with it.

Jack, Janet and Chrissy are upset that they will be spending a quiet Christmas at home. When they receive an invitation to spend the holiday with the Ropers, they accept. However, the kids are later invited to a big party at a friends' home. Jack and Janet are eager to go to the party, but Chrissy is adamant that they should spend the evening with the Ropers because they have already accepted the invitation.

Cyndy's going to visit her aunt who lives on a farm, so she invites the gang to go with her. Jack is a city slicker so he's not interested. But when a guy calls telling him, he plans to do stuff to Jack. Jack wonders what's going on. Larry then tells him that he was seeing two girls who know each so he told one of them that his name is Jack Tripper. Now the boyfriend of the one who thinks he's Jack Tripper is upset with him. So Jack decides to go to the farm and he, Janet, and Terri sleep in the barn and things get hairy.

Janet Wood and Chrissy Snow are a pair of career girls living in Santa Monica. When their other roommate Eleanor moves out after getting married and having a baby they begin the process of looking for a replacement when they find party crasher and aspiring chef Jack Tripper sleeping in their bathtub. When the girls taste his cooking they decide to ask him to be their roommate in a very platonic arrangement. Unfortunately, this doesn't go over well with their prudish landlord Stanley Roper, who thinks that there will be nothing but hanky panky going on after he moves in. However, the girls tell Roper that the very heterosexual Jack is gay in order for him to move in. The only person who know's about the ruse is Roper's seemingly oversexed wife Helen. The Ropers later sell the building to real estate magnate Bart Furley who hires his self-described ladies man (in his own mind) brother Ralph to be the building's manager. A few years into the arrangement, Chrissy moves back to Fresno to be with her ailing mother and is at first replaced by her cousin Cindy, who later is replaced by pretty young nurse Terri Alden. All the while Jack, who despite his best efforts, tries to make it with his roommates.

Janet and Chrissy are two girls who live with another girl but when she leaves they are in need of a new roommate who among other things can cook, which is what she did. The day following their roommate's going away party, they find that one of the guests, a man, who was so drunk, slept in the bathroom without their knowledge. His name is Jack Tripper and he is a culinary student, who's living in Y(MCA). They ask him if he would like to move in with them. He agress. But their landlord Mr. Roper doesn't agree until he is told that Jack's gay. So Jack has to pretend and allow Mr. Roper to think that he is gay, but it's difficult for a swinging guy like Jack not to suppress his interest in girls. After a few seasons the Ropers were spun-off into their own show. So, Mr. Roper sold the building and the new building manager is Ralph Furley, a guy who thinks himself a ladies' man. The following season, Suzzane Somers who plays Chrissy got into a little dispute with the producers and would eventually be written off, and to fill the void she left, the character of Cindy, Chrissy's cousin was added. The following season, Cindy left to go to college and they got a new roommate Terri, a nurse.

Lana sees an article in a newspaper's advice column wherein a guy says he is living with two girls and that's he's doing it with one of them. She assumes it's Jack. So she brings this to the attention of Janet who thinks it's not possible till she remembers that Crissy was cutting up the paper she assumes to keep her from seeing the article. So that's when things get unpleasant.

In the debut episode of the series set in Santa Monica, California, Janet and Chrissy have woken up the next day after the moving away party for their friend Eleanor. Chrissy enters the bathroom to find a man (Jack Tripper) sleeping in the tub so she he runs and gets Janet. Jack is startled awake and discovers he's soaking wet while Janet holds a ladle out like a gun, asking "Who are you?" (in her short lived New York accent). Jack introduces himself and tells them he was one of the party crashers. They get Jack out of the bathroom and offer to dry his clothes in the oven and let him wear one of their frilly robes until later. Chrissy gets the idea to have Jack move in because he lives at the YMCA and a man would be great protection for them. After initial reluctance, Janet goes for the idea. Meanwhile, landlord Stanley Roper is awake downstairs and still bothered about all the noise from the party last night. He goes up to complain and finds Jack there. He then runs to get his wife Helen who doesn't believe him but she goes just the same. Stanley (more than Helen) does not approve of the idea of Jack living with two girls. Jack goes with Chrissy to the kitchen for his clothes and offers to leave so they don't get in trouble. When they come back out in the living room, Stanley and Helen have suddenly changed their minds. Jack asks Janet how she talked them into it and after short explanation gives him the upshot, "Oh,I also told him that you were gay!" ...and so it started.

Jack joins Janet and her boss at a business date. Jack gets drunk and when home, he accidentally gets into Janet's bed. She gets him out but he does not remember anything. In the morning, with a few wrong words, he thinks he slept with her.

When the person who was suppose to go with her can't, she asks Jack to but he has the cold. So she has him take some medication but it makes him tipsy. When they come home, Jack somehow ends sleeping with Janet in her bed. When they wake up and after having a conversation with Janet who was talking about something else, Jack jumps to the wrong conclusion about what she is talking about.

Larry wants his girlfriend to with him to a cabin. But she's an actress and refuses to go in case someone "calls" with a job. So he tells her that Jack Tripper, a director, will be with them. So she agrees. Larry tries to get Jack to go but he's too exhausted to go, but Larry assures him he will get plenty of rest. Before leaving Larry tells the girls they can go there any time. And they do. And so does Lana and Furley, because Lana wants to hook up with Jack and she needed Furley to being her there.

However, the kids think that Stanley is going to leave Helen for another woman. As a result, Chrissy and Janet attempt to tell Helen what they think Stanley is planning to do, and Jack tells Stanley that Helen is a wonderful woman and should make her happy.

Cindy's having trouble with her boyfriend and tells Jack and Janet about it. At the same time a friend of hers is pregnant and the father ran out on her. She offers to help. She calls someone asking for anything that she can give to help her friend. Jack and Janet over hear part of her conversation and assume that she's the one who's pregnant. Jack goes to see the boyfriend to tell him that he should do right by Cindy but he says she owes him. That's when Jack offers to marry her.

So they ask Mr. Furley if they could use the rent money to help Jack and he agrees but says they have till next week to pay him. So they ask Larry to pose as a radio DJ who calls Jack and says if he answers his question he'll get $ 500. And he answers it and once he gets the money he goes out and buys a coat which makes the girls upset. Furley then lets it slip that the girls need money so Jack decides to give them the rent money for the restaurant. So he goes to the bar where they are and tries to slip them the money. But gives it to a customer.

While they are cleaning the overgrown mess Jack nearly impales his foot and Chrissy finds some strange weeds which she gives Mrs. Roper to use for the floral arrangement, which she enters in a flower show. However, Larry sees some of the leftover weeds and tells Jack and Chrissy that they are marijuana. They go to the police station but Jack, a little tipsy after drinking Roper's homemade beer, chickens out. Things then go from bad to worse when Chrissy remembers that the Helen used some of the weeds in her flower arrangement. Then then try to call Helen before she gets arrested for possession.

The guys get a phone answering machine. Larry tells Jack he sets him up with a girl who will call him. Later a girl named Rita calls and leaves Jack a message telling him where they will meet. Jack goes to see her. Thing is she thinks Jack is a fence whom she wants to fence some diamonds for her. When Jack meets her, they arrange to meet at his place later, she then kisses him and slips him the diamonds. When he goes home, he finds them and freaks out and shows the girls. That's when Rita and a guy show up demanding their money.

Later, after hearing this, Max became furious and begins stalking Jack, threatening his life.

Hoping that the guy will come after. They assign a cop to protect Jack. Janet takes a liking to him. Eventually Jack recalls what was distinctive about the robber; his tattoo. And the cop has the same tattoo, so they assume that the cop is the robber and he is there to take out Jack.

A building inspector claims that there's a minor infraction at Jack's restaurant which gives him cause to have it closed unless Jack pays him off. The girls tell him to record the man soliciting a pay off. He calls the police and they play the tape without Jack there but the man only hears Jack's earlier conversation with Furley about "pot" "from Mexico" that could be costly. So the police go to the restaurant to get Furley.

Janet begins to feel like her life is lacking something due to her reliable image. The last straw comes when Larry invites her, Jack and Chrissy to brunch at a Persian restaurant, but she can't go because she has to wait for the telephone repairman to arrive. She then decides to break away from her wholesome image by joining a bunch of nudists at the beach with Mrs. Roper, who also feels neglected, especially when she finds out that Stanley was ogling all the nude women. Unfortunately, the police arrive and break up the protest and when Jack, Chrissy, Larry and Mr. Roper find out they rush to the police station to see if they can bail Janet and Helen out of jail.

Jack goes to the bar and tries to pick up a woman by using an old line. She turns him down. Larry shows up with a fake mustache, he says he thinks it'll make him more appealing to the women. Jack thinks he's crazy. Larry approaches the woman Jack tried to pick up and she leaves with him. He says he used the same line Jack tried. Thinking that a mustache might help Jack decides to get one. When he goes home, Janet thinks he looks silly. But Terri throws herself at Jack. Janet tells Jack that Terri's infatuated with him. He thinks she's crazy till Terri kisses him. She tells Jack they have to find a way to make him less appealing and she thinks she knows what will work. So as Jack goes to see Terri, her mother shows up and tells Janet why Terri is behaving the way she is and that Janet's plan won't work.

While Janet and Chrissy are disco-dancing in their apartment, they create a "disturbance" to one of their neighbors, which causes a visit from a police officer. The officer, Daniel Trent, informs Janet and Chrissy of the issue. While doing so, Chrissy and Daniel recognize each other as distant cousins. After Daniel leaves, he accidentally leaves his handcuffs behind, leading to Jack and Chrissy fiddling around with them. As a result, they handcuff each other, but not before they discover that they don't have the keys to unlock them.

Upset on seeing his changed behavior, Helen plans to discuss the situation with Jerry without Stanley knowing. Helen asks the kids to lent her and Jerry their apartment so they could meet privately. However, Jack, Janet, Chrissy, and Jerry all get the wrong idea of Mrs. Roper's meeting request.

When he visits the kids' apartment to extend the invitation, they sneak out, thinking that Mr. Roper is wanting to collect the rent money.

Mr. Angelino has a vacant restaurant which he is trying to rent out. When Jack decides to get it, he jumps in without checking it out first. He discovers that it needs a lot of work so he pulls all of his money in the bank to use on the renovation. But he still needs to come up with the rent money and the bank won't grant him a loan.

Terri's seeing a dentist but wants to break up with him but can't seem to be able to do it. Jack has a toothache so Terri arranges for the guy she's seeing to see Jack but he's so terrified. Jack goes to see him and he tells Jack that he has to come back in a week for his treatment which is drilling. But just before his appointment, Terri with help from Janet dumps him and when he sees Jack in her place he assumes it's because of him. And Jack is unaware of what happened and goes for his appointment.

Larry offers a job for Jack to be a live-in cook for his boss and his wife, the Laytons. While Jack is not too thrilled about the idea at first, he later seriously considers it when he gets into an argument with Janet and Chrissy. He, therefore, moves out and gets dinner for the night for the Laytons. However, Jack got more than he bargained for when Mrs. Layton makes passes at him, and Janet and Chrissy are stuck in the apartment trying to learn how to cook and learn how to protect themselves.

At first Jack doesn't remember him, but he then remembers that the guy helped Jack get out of Navy a little early so he thinks that's why the FBI is looking for him. When they return Jack puts on a dress and pretends to be Chrissy who's suppose to go out with a client.

Jack and the girls want to redecorate the apartment and they expect Furley to pay the costs. But Furley says the owner, his brother won't let him. And the Dean at Jack's cooking school, wants to cook for a party he's throwing and is not going to compensate him. Jack then goes to a therapist who specializes in instilling assertiveness. And he does with Jack, who goes out and stands up to the Dean. Jack then goes home and chooses the wall paper which Janet doesn't like and stands his ground by being a jerk. And when Furley comes in, he maintains his position about him paying for the costs but Furley also went to the same therapist and stands up to Jack.

When Jack visits Cindy's office to confront him on the allegations, Mr. Hadley gets defensive. He later discovers that she has been typing a resume for Jack during her work time, which ultimately led her being terminated from her job. As a result, Jack promised to set things straight.

However, when Jack wasn't looking, one of his classmates switches his unprepared dish with Jack's, giving Jack a failing grade on his exam. When he might not graduate from cooking school, Jack tells Janet and Chrissy that he is leaving town.

Jack helps an elderly woman, Gladys Moore, take her groceries to her apartment, which is in the same complex. Grateful for the help, Gladys brings Jack a thank you gift. Soon, Gladys becomes a very clingy mother-figure to Jack, driving him off the wall.

Jack learns that the check is, of course, fraudulent, and tries to steal the check back from Roper.

Larry plans to get married and introduces his bride-to-be, Gloria, to Jack, Janet and Chrissy. When Jack was alone in the kitchen preparing the food, Gloria comes in, informs Jack that they went to high school together and makes a pass at him. After Jacks later tells the girls what happened, they urge Jack to tell Larry the truth in hopes of getting him out of the wedding. Jack tells Larry the story, albeit he was too drunk at the time for Larry to understand, and the wedding proceeds.

Jack's older brother, Lee, pays him a visit. Jack cannot stand him because of him being "Number One" in everything he does. When Lee visits and impresses Janet and Chrissy, Jack feels inferior, and wants to find a way to compete against him. Things get complicated, however, when Lee starts dating Chrissy.
